I read this excerpt about St. Therese a few years ago, and it was a powerful reminder to not diminish St. Therese's faith as something easily-won, or "sweet."
And I imagine many of us have done that at some point -- considering we call her the little flower. 🌹 It sounds so very sweet, right? But she experienced a lot of loss, anxiety, doubt, dryness and fear.

“To say Thérèse “saw” God’s redeeming love—risks falsifying her witness. Often, for years on end, she saw nothing; she looked for her beloved, and no one appeared. It is wrong to imagine that Thérèse constantly experienced burning ardor, eyes afire with vision, faith alive with sight. She didn’t. She spent years in darkness, seeing what you and I see, ordinary things, and of God, nothing at all.

"Faith is not a feeling, not even a feeling of devotion, not an ardor. It is often, so far as ordinary sentiments go, an emptiness, an aridity -- a mind jumbled with distraction, directionless, unfeeling. Faith is a calm and feelingless redirecting of mind and will toward the unseen love, notable more for its steadiness and willingness to go on acting just as it would if it had been carried along by transports of joy, instead of being left bereft of signs and comforts. Only in that way can faith be tested for truth, steadfastness, and authenticity. Only in that way is it shown to be the real thing.” (Michael Novak)

Therese was counseled to hold fast to her faith and move forward despite those feelings, or lack thereof. That, "what matters is not our feelings, but the quiet witness of our daily actions."

Which sounds like it might have been a brick on the road of her little way.

This is one of my favorite things I've heard about St. Therese: “St. Therese is a doctor of the church... We know is that life wasn’t easy for her, and that she struggled likely with depression, anxiety... But she’s a doctor of the church. She’s got a lot figured out. She has a PhD in holiness. And what does she say to us, what’s her primary message to us? It’s summed up as the Little way. One of her favorite scriptures was about those who are poor in spirit. Those who are poor know their need for God and turn to him. That’s her secret.” (Jake Khym)

“St. Therese had her own battle to fight against self-reliance. Her one goal was to become a saint, but she quickly found that she was completely incapable of achieving it on her own. There were so many virtues to acquire and sacrifices to be made. She felt she was too weak. However, everything she knew of God was rooted in the truth that He would not inspire a desire that was impossible…

"Therefore sanctity was not about what she could do for God, or about stacking up her own salvation points, but rather boldly believing in His love, trusting He would supply what she lacked. Therese would employ a new tactic against self-reliance. When a moment came when she needed patience, or another virtue, even though she did not feel she had it in her, she would ask it from the Lord, and step into that situation with confidence that He would provide it.
